The technique of Kawarinuri was one of the traditional techniques of lacquering the sheath of a sword. The unique finish of this fine writing instrument is achieved by wrapping the surface with shark skin, applying rust, and polishing using a grinding stone to make a granular pattern. The dimensions are achieved by layers of lacquering Shu-Urushi on the entire body, which after drying up, are polished through a finishing process called "Douzuri".
