The technique of Kawarinuri was one of the traditional techniques of lacquering the sheath of a sword. The unique Crocodile skin effect is achieved by painting and polishing a first layer, and then putting rust on a paper pattern set which is then set on the body of the writing instrument. This pattern is removed carefully and then the surface is polished lightly and Urushi colors are applied.
