AP Limited Editions celebrates Russian Miniature
Art from the School of Palekh with the launch of - The
Frog Princess.
Many a Russian fairy tale has been
the subject matter of the Russian Palekh style of art, where
icon-painting traditions are honored with fine details in brilliant
colors on a black background.
Vasilisa is the ‘Frog Princess’ who
is released from captivity by Ivan Tsarevich when his arrow accidentally
landed in a swamp. Ivan was unnerved when he first thought that
he would have to wed a frog (since it was part of a deal among
his brothers and himself that they would shoot arrows in the
direction of the homes of the beautiful women they sought to
marry). What looked like a curse for Ivan when he saw the frog
revealed a brilliant future instead, when the frog was transformed
into the most beautiful Vasilisa and they lived happily ever
after.
