The Nine Nights is inspired by The Divine Shakti or Power! Goddess Durga is revered and worshipped in very large numbers in India and as we were growing up we heard many a tale about this powerful Goddess.
The Nine Nights is a legendary story from Indian mythology of a fearsome battle between Goddess Durga, the epitome of female power and Mahishasura, the king of demons.. Mahishasura, the buffalo headed demon had grown form strength to strength after accomplishing severe penance that granted him a boon of becoming invincible by the Gods in Heaven. In return for the austerities he performed to them, they rewarded him with this blessing that he would not be vanquished by any man in the three worlds. Mahishasura began to misuse his new found strength and soon usurped the throne of the Kingdom of Heaven and unleashed a reign of terror. The heavenly Gods realized the mistake they made in helping Mahishasura become invincible and they used their powers to then create a female to destroy him. The manifestation of their collective intent produced the great Goddess Durga, or Shakti, the sacred feminine force, who met Mahishasura in a battle that lasted nine days and eventually vanquished him.
AP Limited Editions offers a magnificent tribute to this legendary story of the ultimate triumph of Good over Evil in a Palekh rendering of the intense moment of this great battle with The Great Goddess Durga thrusting her celestial sword into the buffalo headed demon. |
